The world-leading Finnish wave energy technology developer AW-Energy has taken another major step towards commercialising its WaveRoller™ technology. In mid-August the company signed a Framework Agreement with the independent certification organisation Vysus Group Energy.
The agreement will see Vysus Group Energy utilise its considerable experience of marine power generation assets to provide a valuable independent review of all stages of the work carried out by the WaveRoller™ team. This will ensure that risks are identified and mitigated through the entire project lifecycle, and that the WaveRoller™ technology fulfils industry best practice.
Ross Wigg, VP Renewables at Vysus Group Energy said: “Vysus Group Energy has a long history in certifying devices in the marine environment and AW-Energy’s WaveRoller™ project is one of the world’s latest innovations for the renewable sector.”
The collaboration with Vysus Group aims at full certification of the WaveRoller™ technology. In addition to the obvious technical advantages, certification will help to optimise project financing and facilitate insurance coverage on a commercial basis.
Wigg highlighted: “AW-Energy’s engagement throughout the certification process is encouraging and we are looking forward to working alongside them to assure their technology and commercial success.”
AW-Energy CEO, John Liljelund said: “AW-Energy has a long history of working with reliable and strong partners. The continuous collaboration with companies like Vysus Group Energy and with DNV GL, both leading institutions in technical advice and certification, further bolsters the world-class development team at AW-Energy.”
“I am thrilled to see the emergence of one of the prerequisites for WaveRoller™'s commercial roll out. The involvement of an institution like Vysus Group Energy to this extent will ensure that the highest quality standards and technical excellence are met.”
Commercial wave energy projects are being implemented around the world as governments and utilities welcome this alternative to their renewables portfolios. Installed wave energy capacity will see huge growth during the next few years.
Today AW-Energy is among the top few technology providers whose level of development meets the requirements of commercial projects such as ongoing installations in Portugal, Ireland, France, UK, Chile and the US.
The official launch of the Framework Agreement between AW-Energy and Vysus Group Energy was witnessed at the Embassy of Finland in London. Leena Gardemeister, Chargé d'Affaires, Embassy of Finland in London commented:
"The Finnish Embassy in London is delighted to witness the signing of the Framework Agreement, which opens the door for wide scale commercial deployment of Finnish wave energy solutions globally. The WaveRoller™ technology not only offers a novel and previously untapped source of renewable energy; it has minimal visual impact and it even creates artificial basis for reef ecosystems to flourish. Companies like AW-Energy are the key players in Team Finland, which increasingly focuses on CleanTech solutions for global sustainability challenges. We were honoured to host Mr. Mark Prisk MP, Prime Minister's Investment Envoy to Nordic and Baltic States as well as and Mr. John Liljelund CEO AW-Energy and Mr. Ross Wigg, VP Vysus Group Energy with their teams at the Embassy."
