Using existing information for new applications – An emergency preparedness & response perspective
Nuclear power is increasingly becoming more prevalent in the discussions on how to limit global warming, underpinned, e.g. by notable appearances of IAEA during COP26 alongside announcements on nuclear new build plans from China and France as well as a UK government pledge of £1.7bn. If our belief in the importance of nuclear technology, e.g. for coping with climate change goes up, so do the stakes of anything we do within our field, including risk assessment. But how do we avoid becoming too heavy-footed in the market as the sheer volume of research, lessons learned and documentation accumulates? Can we use already produced information in new applications? Anders Riber Marklund, nuclear safety & licensing principal consultant at Vysus Group, explores an example of how the ability to process existing safety assessment results together with observations during an incident can strengthen emergency preparedness & response.
