Laying the foundations: Determining underwater noise for Ørsted

This study was performed by Vysus’ Engineering Dynamics team

Client

Ørsted

Asset type

Offshore wind farm

Result

Determined level of underwater noise from piling. The data was used by Ørsted for sound exposure modelling.

Client Challenge

Ørsted constructs and operates offshore and onshore wind farms, providing energy products to customers around the world. They required a study that detailed the level of underwater noise that would result from piling during the construction of their future Ocean Wind offshore windfarm located off the East coast of the USA. The acoustic metrics used in the study had to align with guidelines from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NFMS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to ensure the project was compliant with the current US regulations.

How we helped

We conducted survey type modelling that provided a quick overview of the site acoustics and precision type modelling for best accuracy. The latter included geotechnical- acoustic (WEAP type), structural-acoustic Finite Element (FE) and dedicated underwater acoustic propagating models (PE type). These models provided data which helped to predict and determine the level of underwater noise from the piling of the wind turbine foundations.

This project was carried out by Lloyd’s Register (LR) Energy, prior to the strategic carve out of the LR Energy business in 2020, which is now Vysus Group.
